Alex Katz paints pictures devoid of aggression and histrionics. His paintings emanate a gentle energy of infectious charm that can quite seduce the viewer of the work. The artist is amongst the few painters of the twentieth century to have set themselves the goal of the quest for the beautiful. He discovers it in his daily environment, his family and friends, in the city and the countryside, by night and by day. His ability to translate brief moments into permanence gives his pictures an astoundingly long-term topicality. Alex Katz's painting is at once current and outside time.
