Not only was the Peter Wenzel Collection featuring works by Nam June Paik the source of the first large-scale solo exhibition after the death of the “Godfather of Video Art”, who described himself as the “first artist of the 21st century”, the comprehensive exhibition in the Museum Bochum also marked the first time that the collection was made available to the public. In addition to approximately 80 works on paper, beginning with the “Necktie Drawing” from 1961 and leading up to the last pastel chalk works created after the year 2000, rare documents from the early 1960s as well as documentation of the collaboration with the cellist Charlotte Moorman and several sculptural works were also on view. The exhibition was especially interesting because of the fact that, as opposed to earlier Paik exhibitions, the focus was laid on the artist’s works on paper. This is also the first time that a Paik exhibition and accompanying catalogue were compiled solely on the basis of one single collection.
