"With her site-specific installations, her wallpaper works that touch on fundamental questions with regard to seeing and perceiving, her collages and later décollages, her books and book projects, Katharina Gaenssler makes use of the technical possibilities of photography, without giving in to classical imperatives. Gaenssler constructs and deconstructs. Her site-specific installations are time-based and thus more closely related to performance art than to art products that strive for permanence. What remains is memory. What remains are documentary photographs and catalogues, which can, however, only transmit a greatly reduced impression of the original work.” (Hans-Michael Koetzle). The first section of this publication documents 21 photo-installations from the years 2003 through 2010. The most recent work, “KdeE”, a photo-installation on the reconstruction of Kurt Schwitters’ “Merzbau” in the Sprengel Museum in Hanover, is illustrated in the second section on a total of 28 pages on a 1:1 scale.
