Magic Worlds

The Statue of Liberty nestles at the foot of the Alps, the rocky deserts of North America expand across the Ruhr valley. In the artificial worlds created by amusement parks, one can marvel at several of the world's scenic and architectural highlights, all within the space of a few hours. Space and time seem to have dissolved, all physical laws are contradicted. Common clichés about exotic countries are revisited against a backdrop of perfectly arranged scenery. With a plunging ride on the roller coaster, this painstakingly designed plastic idyll becomes mere background for the "ultimate thrill". This is no longer a trip out into the world but rather an adrenalin ride to one's physical and mental limits.
Both aspects are documented in this book: on the one hand the clear and distanced view of artificial sceneries, which makes the bounds between artificiality and naturalness disappear; and on the other hand the faces of those riding the roller coaster, which vary between pleasure, joy, fear and panic. These two sets of photographs induce the viewer to confront the inconsistencies and defects in today's reality.
