Pjotr Nathan The
one who counts the stars / Der, der die Sterne zählt |
Identity is the central theme running
through Nathan's allegories on gender, visuality and homelessness. In every
case, identity is seen as a set of terms representing not so much an empirical
fact but rather a quantity always open to revision or even inversion. Nathan
successfully gets the observer to rethink what he takes for granted. The
most convincing thing about Nathan's approach is the fact that none of these
themes are presented in isolation. By means of thematic overlaps, he succeeds
instead in conveying glimpses of the present moment as historical material.
This ability to treat the present time as a relic to be reflected on is
one of the main insights provided by the allegorical process.
