»Secret Ballet« scheint auf ersten Blick die leicht leserliche Autobiografie einer (fiktiven) konservativen Politikerin namens Jane Swallow zu sein. Das Buch schildert Janes unruhiges Privat- und Familienleben, ihre schöpferischen Ambitionen, ihre persönlichen Intrigen und Affairen und ihre von Katzenjammer begleiteten politschen Schmutzkampagnien.
Der gesamte Roman ist aus dem Fundus von 90.000 Beispielsätzen des Pons Collins COBUILD English Language Dictionary von 1987 zusammengesetzt – ein Wörterbuch, welches zum ersten Mal auf wirkliche Sätze aus dem aktuellen Alltagsgebrauch zurückgriff.
Der Arbeitsansatz von »Secret Ballet« ist der einer Rekonstruktion eines fiktiven Gesamtwerkes, dessen Satzsplitter über das gesamte Wörterbuch versprengt lägen. Dadurch ergibt sich ein Abbild der gesellschaftlichen Themen und Ideologien der späten 60er, 70er und frühen 80er Jahre.
»Secret Ballet« appears to be the easy-to-read autobiography of Jane Swallow, a (fictional) conservative politician. The book describes Jane's troubled private and family life, her creative ambitions, personal intrigues and affairs as well as her clumsy attempts at political mud-slinging and character assassination.
The entire text has been composed from the set of over 90,000 example sentences reproduced in the Collins COBUILD English Language Dictionary of 1987. These examples were compiled, for the first time, from a large corpus of ‘English texts, spoken and written, running to many millions of words […] the words came from books, magazines, newspapers, pamphlets, leaflets, conversations, radio and television broadcasts.
The working approach was to re-construct a fictional shattered mastertext that is thought of as being dispersed across the entire dictionary. By bringig together the then current topics, phrases and ways of speaking, »Secret Ballet« reflects the totality of ideas and opinions of the late 60's, 70's and early 80's.
